What's more fun than a gooey mess???

A solid liquid? The Cornstarch Experiment

Cornstarch is normally used in cooking for thickening puddings and gravies and such. It is also really fun to play with!

If you mix it with the right amount of water, it is a liquid that is magically a solid when struck, cut with a butter knife, or worked vigorously in your hands.

Remember to ask permission before you make this fun experiment!

1. cover a table with newspaper!

2. Put some cornstarch into a bowl. Slowly add while mixing with your fingers until all the cornstarch is wet.

3. Add water just until your mixture feels like a liquid when being mixed slowly. The mixture should be about 1 part water to 1.5–2 parts cornstarch.

4. Play and Experiment! Try tapping on the top of your mixture with your finger or a spoon. If you mixed it right, it will feel solid!

If your mixture is too powdery, add a little more water.

If it's too wet, add more cornstarch.

You can also add a drop of food coloring to change the color!

Home Made Silly Slime (successfully tested!)

When I found this recipe in a book, it said that it would make silly putty. When we tried it though, it did make something really fun - just not silly putty. This silly slime is fun to play with and easy to make. It WILL stick to things though, so please be careful!

You will need Multi-Purpose glue. We used Elmers Multi-Purpose glue that we picked up at the hobby store. DO NOT use white school glue or tacky craft glue because your mixture will NOT work! You will also need some liquid starch. We used Sta Flo liquid starch in a blue bottle that we found in the laundry section of the grocery store.

All you have to do is mix two parts multi-purpose white glue to one part of liquid starch. Mix these ingredients and let the mix sit until it is workable. If it is too sticky, mix in some more starch. We found that it was easiest to mix with our hands. At first it is hard to get it to come together, but then it just all turns into a slime. We used 1/2 cup of multi-purpose glue, and 1/4 cup of starch. As we were mixing, we added more starch about a tablespoon at a time until we liked the consistancy.

It didn't stick to our hands, but it stuck to newspaper, and the wooden table that we were working on. Please be careful!

You can store your slime in an airtight container or zip lock bag.

According to the book, this recipe may not work on days that are too humid!

Homemade Stickers

These stickers are like the old fashioned stamps. You lick them, then stick them. Since this recipe uses boiling water, you will want to ask an adult to help you!

Here's what you'll need:

1 envelope (1/4 ounce) unflavored gelatin

1 Tablespoon cold water

3 Tablespoons boiling water

1/2 Teaspoons white corn syrup or sugar

1/2 Teaspoon vanilla or lemon extract

A sheet of paper

To make your stickers, first draw your stickers onto your paper. You can also use magazine pictures or photocopy pictures. Anything on paper should work.

To make the sticker mixture:

1. Put the cold water into a bowl and sprinkle the gelatin in. Let this sit for five minutes. After it has sat for 5 minutes, pour the boiling water onto the soft gelatin and wait for it to dissolve.

2. Next, add the corn syrup or sugar and the extract mixing it well until it is a brushable substance.

3. Brush the sticker mixture on to the back of your paper making sure to cover the entire surface.

4. Allow the paper to dry completley. The paper will probably curl up as it dries. After it dries, put the paper under a phone book or other large book to flatten it out again.

5. Cut out your stickers. You can cut them into shapes like circles, squares or triangles, or you can follow the lines of the shape of your picture.

Now, you can lick and stick your stickers!
